LOCATION OF POSITION

This recruitment is being conducted to fill three contractual positions with the MD Department of General Services, Facilities Operations and Maintenance Division. The positions are located in Baltimore County, MD.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of General Services (DGS) is seeking maintenance professionals to fill
Maintenance Mechanic Senior positions at the newly built Catonsville District Courthouse and the Towson District Courthouse. The Maintenance Mechanic Senior assists the Maintenance Supervisor (Building Manager) on a daily basis with building operations and maintenance tasks. Performs plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, electrical and grounds work duties as required to maintain facilities. Designated as a 24-hour Emergency Essential Employee.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • 30% - Maintains grounds, performs maintenance repairs on associated gasoline operating equipment. Mows lawn area, clears roadways, parking lot and sidewalk of debris and clutter.
  •  30% - Performs repairs to building. Replaces ceiling tiles, floor tile and lighting throughout the building. Repairs doors, locks, hinges and related hardware.
  • 15% - Visually inspects plumbing fixtures, completes repairs. Corrects spills, leaks, breakage and cleans up same. 
  • 5% - Works with and/or supervises community service workers. Maintains landscape areas, flowered areas and shrubbery.
  • 5% - Receives supplies keeps records, stores materials in neat and orderly fashion. Maintains inventory records for materials used.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades, three years must be in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field for up to three years of the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
