Main Purpose of Job

Operates various pieces of standard or specialized equipment such as front end-loaders/backhoes, sweepers, or 3/4 ton trucks. Measures and excavate grave for internment of casketed or cremated remains. May supervise or train building and grounds workers and cemetery care takers to operate equipment when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the sixth grade.

Experience: One year of experience in the operation of complex or specialized construction or maintenance equipment which has a pedal operated clutch and a multi-speed manual transmission.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Equipment Operator classifications or Equipment Operator and Vehicle Operator specialty codes in the Equipment Operation field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in cemetery maintenance.

Experience in grounds and building maintenance.

Ability to effectively operate multiple pieces of equipment; including but not limited to tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes and vault haulers.

Ability to perform routine maintenance on operating vehicles. Ability to perform heavy physical labor.

Ability to deal effectively and courteously with superiors, co-workers and the public.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants for Motor Equipment Operator I/II and III must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License depending on the type of equipment operated. All applicants must list their license number and date of issue on the application. Employees in the State Highway Administration, Department of Transportation may be required to obtain and maintain Departmental certification on several pieces of specialized seasonal equipment.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.  The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.
