Main Purpose of Job

This position is as a Unit Director with responsibility for direct oversight and management/administration of unit-based activities and the supervision of clinical staff assigned to the unit. The individual will be a fully privileged member of the Medical Staff of Springfield Hospital Center. The position holder must facilitate high quality patient care and ensure best practices are followed through regular attendance at unit morning reports and by monitoring unit functioning through observation of patient/team interactions and review of medical record documentation. The physician is also charged with direct patient care responsibilities (i.e. the duty of evaluating, diagnosing, admitting, treating patients, and making discharge and after-care plans for the patients admitted to the hospital, with the participation of the patients, most commonly of young adult age and middle age, less commonly of geriatric age, and only rarely adolescents.)This requires 24/7 availability over the phone to offer consultation/ recommendations or resolve conflicts when necessary.

In addition to this ongoing assessment of unit functioning, the position requires the offering of recommendations for improving clinical interventions and providing leadership in maintaining effective team functioning. This position influences the clinical functioning of the hospital via participation in Medical Staff meetings and service on assigned hospital committees. 

All clinical activities and duties are to be carried out in accordance with hospital policies, rules and regulations in accordance with performance improvement goals, and within the fiscal constraints mandated to the hospital. All clinical activities are to be documented in the medical record as required by hospital policies. The physician supports the mission of the organization through active administrative and direct participation in clinical efforts to provide treatment in a recovery oriented environment. The foundation of a recovery oriented environment is respect and a commitment to safety in the least restrictive manner possible.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Physicians under the licensing requirements for Physicians.

Experience: As required for certification in Psychiatry by the American Medical Association Specialty Board or other Board approved by the Maryland Board of Physicians.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1 Applicants must be board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Medical Specialties, or other Board approved by the Maryland Board of Physicians

2. Applicants must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A copy of a current Maryland medical license and board certification should be attached to the application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
