Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

Special Assistant is responsible for working with students in the Work to Learn program. The Special Assistant will drive students and job coaches to/from MSD Work to Learn job experiences. The Special Assistant will provide additional resources to enable the Employment Specialist to provide more direct services. The Specialist Assistant will be part of the team in marketing the program in the community with the goal of creating new job opportunities for our students. The Special Assistant will collect time sheets and verify the students' hours, then deliver the documents to Frederick County Workforce Center. The Special Assistant will assist in collecting evaluations from employers two times per semester. The Special Assistant will provide one to one mentoring when necessary.

POSITION DUTIES

Work with individual students in supporting them with their work experience. Understand the driving schedule and provide safe driving to job sites from Maryland School for the Deaf. Communicate and collect time sheets and follow due dates. Market the Work to Learn program by communicating with potential employers in the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: Fluency in ASL and written English required.  Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred. Has a driver’s license and has a good driving record.  Experience in working with deaf and hard of hearing students desired.  Knowledge of students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational background required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
