This is school library work teaching youth or adult students in an educational program operated by the Department of Education or Juvenile Justice in a correctional, juvenile justice or vocational rehabilitation facility. Employees in this classification do not supervise other librarians.

Employees in these classifications receive general supervision from a Principal or other educational administrator at the facility. The work is performed in a correctional, juvenile justice or vocational rehabilitation facility where the students may be disruptive or abusive and may require remedial training or comprehensive rehabilitation services.

Levels within the classification series are determined by an assessment of the employee’s educational credentials by the supervising educational administrator using Maryland State Department of Education regulations and guidelines.


Provides classroom instruction in library science to students in an educational program at a correctional, juvenile justice or vocational rehabilitation facility;

Prepares daily and weekly lesson plans and other instructional material;

Assists students with research projects, recommends appropriate instructional and educational reading, and explains cataloging and reference procedures;

Determines which educational materials would be most appropriate for assigned students and orders books, visual aids, computer software and other materials;

Cooperates with correctional or rehabilitation case management staff and counselors and provides student attendance and progress reports to students and staff;

Cooperates with inter disciplinary staff in planning, implementing and monitoring comprehensive rehabilitation programs;

Facilitates and maintains a library classroom environment conducive to learning;

May prepare and administer a budget;

Performs other related duties.


Education: Possession of appropriate educational credentials as determined by the Maryland State Board of Education.
