NATURE OF WORK

A Maintenance Mechanic Senior is the advanced level of work in the building and grounds maintenance trades.  Employees in this classification perform general maintenance tasks such as simple construction, repairs to roadways and walks, routine preventative maintenance, heavy janitorial and general services work.  Employees in this classification devote the bulk of the work time in the actual performance of maintenance and repair tasks, but on occasion employees may assign work, examine completed work and provide immediate guidance and assistance to a team of unskilled or semi-skilled employees such as Maintenance Mechanics, patient or inmate helpers, chauffeurs and janitorial employees.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Maintenance Chief or other designated higher-level maintenance staff.  Employees may be required to work in areas of extreme heat or cold and may be required to lift heavy objects, such as furniture or equipment.

Positions in this classification are evaluated by using the classification job evaluation methodology.  This method compares the position’s assigned duties and responsibilities to the job criteria defined in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of the class specifications.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Assigns maintenance tasks to semi skilled and unskilled workers;

Reviews completed work;

Maintains routine records;

Performs preventative maintenance, construction and repair work at the semi skilled level in several trades;

Prepares walls for painting;

Erects temporary or permanent fencing;

Resurfaces roadways and walks;

Trains and leads Maintenance Mechanics, semi-skilled and unskilled workers;

May erect stage scenery and rearrange furniture;

May inspect buildings and grounds for adherence to institutional safety and sanitary regulations;

May operate automobiles, pick up and panel trucks, tractors, and power mowers;

Performs other related duties.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation.  An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
