A Carpenter, Trim is the advanced level of work in woodworking, involving precision cutting, fitting and finishing of wood.  Employees in this classification do not supervise other carpenters but may supervise lower-level maintenance employees or helpers.  

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Carpenter Supervisor or other designated higher-level staff.  Work is performed at various State facilities.  Employees in this classification may be required to work in elevated areas and may be required to lift heavy objects.  

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The is use of this method involves comparing the duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class specification.  

The Carpenter Trim is differentiated from the Carpenter in that the Carpenter Trim is the advanced level of work in woodworking, precision cutting, fitting and finishing of wood while the Carpenter performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.  The Carpenter Trim is differentiated from the Carpenter Supervisor in that the Carpenter Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Carpenters.  

Constructs and installs sash and door trims, counter tops, cabinets, desks, bookcases, benches, partitions and other types of fine furniture or trim work;

Performs precision cutting, fitting and finishing;

Repairs furniture, equipment and fixtures;

Examines blueprints, drawings, and specifications of articles to be constructed or repaired;

Matches wood for color, grain or texture; Sands, scrapes, bleaches and stains wood surfaces and joints to prepare for finishing;

Plans sequence of cutting or shaping operations to be performed;

Sets up and operates power saws, joiners, mortises, molders, shapers and routers to cut or shape parts from stock according to specifications on drawings;

Trims component parts to assure perfect fit;

Bores holes for insertion of screws or dowels;

Glues, fits and clamps parts and sub‑assemblies together to form complete unit;

Estimates time and material needed to complete a project;

Cleans and repairs tools and equipment;

May dip, brush or spray articles with protective or decorative material, such as stain, varnish or paint;

May install hardware, such as hinges, catches and drawer pulls;

May supervise lower-level maintenance workers or helpers;

Performs other related duties.  

Knowledge of the methods and techniques of carpentry and trim work, wood staining and finishing;

Knowledge of the qualities and characteristics of wood;

Skill in the performance of precise measuring, cutting and installing materials;

Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, blueprints, drawings and specifications;

Ability to estimate cost of materials and supplies;

Ability to match wood for color, grain or texture.  

Education:     Completion of the eighth grade.  

Experience:   Five years of experience in general carpentry, two years of which must have been in finish or trim carpentry work or in cabinetmaking.  

Notes:      

1.  Applicants may substitute additional carpentry experience at a rate of one year of experience for two years of education for up to four years of the required education.      

2.  Graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a concentration in carpentry may be substituted for three years of the required experience.      

3.  Graduation from a vocational or technical trade school with a concentration in carpentry may be substituted for up to three years of the required experience.      

4.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in builder classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the carpentry field of work, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies.  Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.  

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.  

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit A, Labor and Trades classes.  As provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.  

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime, as provided by the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
