An Accountant Manager I is one of three managerial levels of work examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems by applying generally accepted accounting principles in order to modify and maintain agency accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements and give fiscal advice to management. Employees in this classification supervise Accountant Supervisor I positions.
Employees in this classification receive managerial supervision from an Accountant Manager III or other designated administrator.
Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology. The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work sections of a class description or a class specification.
The Accountant Manager I is differentiated from Accountant Supervisor I in that the Accountant Manager I has full managerial responsibility and directly supervises Accountant Supervisor I positions while Accountant Supervisor I has full supervisory responsibility for lower level Accountants performing general accounting work. The Accountant Manager I is differentiated from Accountant Manager II in that the Accountant Manager I has full managerial responsibility and directly supervises Accountant Supervisor I positions while the Accountant Manager II has full managerial responsibility and supervises Accountant Supervisor II positions.
Plans, directs and administers accounting operations of an agency in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures;
Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the work of Accountant Supervisor I positions and related fiscal staff;
Directs training programs for accounting staff;
Implements and enforces generally accepted accounting principles in agency accounting operations;
Assesses accounting operations and identifies units or activities that require tighter internal controls;
Directs the fiscal year close-out in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles;
Directs the preparation of periodic and special reports or statements for use by management and control agencies;
Contacts information processing professionals and fiscal control agencies to resolve major problems with agency accounting systems, policies and procedures;
Reviews audit reports and meets with accounting staff to prepare responses to audit exceptions and develop corrective action plans, presents responses and corrective action plans to management and auditors and implements corrective action plans;
Performs other related duties.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential). As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, Annotated Code of Maryland, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
