A Correctional Supply Officer Supervisor is the supervisory level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in storekeeping and warehousing operations at a correctional facility.  Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Correctional Supply Officers.

Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a designated management official.  The work is performed in and around a correctional facility and employees are continually exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile.  Employees may be required to physically subdue and restrain inmates during fights and escape attempts.

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of the class specification.

The Correctional Supply Officer Supervisor is differentiated from the Correctional Supply Officer III in that the Correctional Supply Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for lower-level Correctional Supply Officers while the Correctional Supply Officer III assigns, reviews and approves the work of and trains lower-level Correctional Supply Officers.


Supervises lower-level Correctional Supply Officers engaged in storekeeping and warehousing at an adult correctional facility by training new workers; assigning and reviewing work; recommending hiring, promotions, and disciplinary actions; explaining policies; approving leave; and performing formal performance evaluations;

Supervises inmate workers in order to prevent theft, identify and report any breaches of security, and evaluate job performance;

Keeps continual count of inmates assigned;

Performs searches of inmates for concealment of drugs, weapons, tools, equipment and other unauthorized items;

Prepares reports of infractions;

Subdues and restrains inmates during fights and escape attempts;

Receives and stores supplies, materials and equipment in order to maintain proper stocks;

Supervises periodic inventory of supplies, material and equipment in order to reconcile actual amounts with written totals;

Receives and processes requisitions for stock replacement from agency personnel in order to monitor the flow of supplies throughout the various departments;

Disburses and accounts for supplies, materials and equipment issued to inmates and agency personnel in order to prevent theft and maintain fiscal and security controls;

Consults with classification and security staff about hiring and retaining inmate workers;

Contacts vendors in order to obtain bids or resolve questions concerning supply purchases;

Performs other related duties.


Knowledge of supervisory methods and principles;

Knowledge of correctional systems and standards;

Knowledge of institutional rules, regulations and requirements for the control of inmates;

Skill in mathematics sufficient to supervise inventories of supplies and materials;

Ability to learn and follow detailed procedures contained in Division of Correction regulations, institutional directives, and post orders;

Ability to train, evaluate and discipline workers in the storekeeping and warehousing operations;

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and respond in an appropriate manner according to prescribed rules and procedures;

Ability to observe and remember incidents and to recall details, such as identity of persons, location of items, conversations and sequence of events and actions taken during the incident;

Ability to work in an institutional setting where personal physical attack by convicted felons is a constant possibility and where the use of physical force to restrain inmates is a required part of the job;

Ability to prepare concise, accurate reports of events and incidents;

Ability to compile and maintain administrative records;

Ability to communicate effectively with assigned inmates, Correctional Officers and other institutional staff.


Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Two years of experience involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmate workers in storekeeping or warehousing operations at a correctional facility.


1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.


Some positions in this classification may require the operation of a motor vehicle for the transportation of inmates or supplies. Employees assigned such duties will be required to acquire the appropriate Maryland driver's license.


1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for institutional support staff during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland). Selection standards for institutional support staff training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
Oral interview
A completed background investigation
Physical examination.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.


Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.

This classification is not assigned to a bargaining unit, as indicated by the designation of S (Supervisor), M (Manager), T (Agency Head), U (Board or Commission Member), W (Student), X (Used by Agency or Excluded by Executive Order), or Z (Confidential).  As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial and confidential employees are excluded collective bargaining.  Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.
