NATURE OF WORK

An Architectural Technician II is the full performance professional level of architectural technical design work or the advanced sub-professional level architectural technical design work involving the supervision of the preparation of preliminary technical designs of the architectural features of proposed building construction or alteration projects.  Employees in this classification supervises the development of initial technical design concepts and architectural drawings, construction specifications, suggested materials and cost estimates through the use of preliminary sketches, field visits and interviews with representatives of the using agency.  Employees in this classification also perform field investigations of State-owned buildings and structures to determine the feasibility and estimated cost for renovation, alteration or replacement.  Employees in this classification supervise architectural drafting positions that prepare detailed drawings based on established technical design concepts.  

Employees in this classification receive general supervision is received from a Registered Architect.  Technical directions may be received from professional architects or engineers.  Proposed technical design concepts and construction specifications require considerable independent judgment, but may be subject to review for architectural technical sufficiency.   

Positions in this classification are evaluated using the classification job evaluation methodology.  The use of this method involves comparing the assigned duties and responsibilities of a position to the job criteria found in the Nature of Work and Examples of Work Sections of a class specification.  

The Architectural Technician I and the Architectural Technician II are differentiated on the basis of degree of supervisory control exercised by the supervisor over these employees.   The Architectural Technician I performs the duties under close supervision while the Architectural Technician II performs the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises the technical design, preparation and reviews preliminary technical drawings of the architectural features for proposed structures;

Supervises the preparation of and prepares detailed recommendations for construction specifications, cost estimates and building materials for building construction or renovation;

Schedules and/or conducts surveys of existing buildings in State institutions and agencies for the purpose of completing a space inventory;

Schedules and/or conducts field investigations and consults with representatives of various agencies in order to gather information regarding the layout and functional design of a certain facility;

Provides technical advice concerning the function and construction of proposed buildings or building alteration and renovation;

Supervises the activities and reviews the work of a group of draftsmen engaged in the preparation of architectural drawings and other complex graphic representations;

Performs other necessary duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of architectural drafting;

Knowledge of the principles of architectural technical design;

Knowledge of modern building and construction methods and techniques;

Knowledge of the materials used in building construction;

Knowledge of the building construction code;

Ability to supervise and review the work of architectural draftsmen or technical assistants;

Ability to work effectively with private professional architects and engineers and with State officials;

Ability to professionally supervise and coordinate the preparation of preliminary architectural designs from rough sketches and descriptions;

Ability to accurately estimate constructions costs to determine appropriate building materials to be used in proposed structures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Full Performance Professional Level  

Education:     A Bachelor’s degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.          

Experience:   Four years of successful, progressively responsible experience in architectural technical design and architectural drafting under the supervision of a Registered Architect.          

OR  

Advanced Sub-professional Level  

Education:     Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.  

Experience:   Nine years of successful, progressively responsible experience in architectural technical design and architectural drafting under the supervision of a Registered Architect.  

Note: Applicants may substitute successful completion of a two-year course in architectural engineering drafting at an accredited technical school for two years of the required experience.

Class specifications are broad descriptions covering groups of positions used by various State departments and agencies. Position descriptions maintained by the using department or agency specifically address the essential job functions of each position.

This is a Skilled Service classification in the State Personnel Management System.  All positions in this classification are Skilled Service positions.  Some positions in Skilled Service classifications may be designated Special Appointment in accordance with the State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 6-405, Annotated Code of Maryland.  

This classification is assigned to Bargaining Unit G, Engineering, Scientific and Administrative Professionals classes. As provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 3-102, special appointment, temporary, contractual, supervisory, managerial, and confidential employees are excluded from collective bargaining. Additionally, certain executive branch agencies are exempt from collective bargaining and all positions in those agencies are excluded from collective bargaining.  

Employees in this classification are eligible to receive overtime compensation. An employee who works more than the normal workweek is entitled to be compensated for that overtime as provided by State Personnel and Pensions Article, Section 8-305.
