Job Description

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) is looking for relief veterinarians to join the pool to support our full time veterinarian and two technicians on an as-needed basis. There is no minimum commitment of days per month, and hours are flexible.

Relief veterinarians perform all routine veterinary care at LCAS for shelter pets, including spay/neuter, general examinations, diagnostics, wound care, dental procedures and do not perform euthanasia. Relief veterinarians have minimal, if any, interaction with the public, and get to spend their time focusing on in-house care of cats, dogs, and some small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs.

Job Requirements

A Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and 2 years of professional experience is required (certificates or specialty training in shelter medicine or other sub-specialties through a veterinary school or applicable industry association may be substituted for the experience requirement with each certificate equivalent to the year's equivalency of coursework represented by the credential(s))

Veterinarians should be comfortable and experienced with HQHVSN practices. Valid Virginia Veterinary License or ability to obtain one within 30 days.

Special Requirements

Must complete a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series (to be provided by Loudoun County) or provide proof of prior vaccination. Work environment has inherent dangers such as fractious animals, fall hazards, loud and repetitive noises, zoonotic disease as well as exposure to unpleasant medical conditions, injuries, and odors. Ability to lift 50 lbs. unassisted as well as provide humane restraint for animals over 100 lbs with assistance. May not have fears of common companion animal species or breeds. Must be able to perform surgical procedures while standing.
