Job Description

The Legislative Aide (LA) to Supervisor Sylvia R. Glass, Broad Run District, assists in the day-to-day work of the district office in Leesburg, Virginia. The LA works with the Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant to be a front-line contact to constituents, Homeowners Associations, County agencies, and any other outside entities. The LA assists with research, review, and analysis of legislation coming before the Board of Supervisors.

Candidates must be comfortable with a role that is not a traditional nine-to-five, including working at least one evening a week and occasional weekends. This is a political position that serves at the pleasure of the Supervisor. Employment can only be guaranteed until the end of the term on December 31st, 2023.

Responsibilities and Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as a first line of contact between the public and the Supervisor.
  • Work with County Administration to develop appropriate responses to community needs.
  • Outreach with community and key constituent groups.
  • Attend meetings with community groups and constituents.
  • Draft speeches and remarks for ribbon cuttings and community events.
  • Help coordinate with county, state, and federal agencies on matters affecting the Broad Run District.
  • Assist with reviewing, drafting, and analyzing legislation.
  • Office communications, including social media and a monthly newsletter.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Legislative Aide reports to the Supervisor through the Chief of Staff.

Job Requirements

Education level: Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, or similar field preferred.

Experience: Two years' experience with an elected official's office, government agency, legislative policy, or other relevant experience preferred.

Special Requirements

Professional skills: Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and email newsletter programs required. Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills are a must. Candidates must be capable of working on multiple projects at a time, managing their time and resources effectively.

Personal characteristics: Preferred candidates will be comfortable working in a high-pressure environment and able to think quickly on their feet. Candidates must be comfortable speaking on behalf of the Supervisor and comfortable speaking to a variety of people under various circumstances.
