The Loudoun County Department of Planning & Zoning is seeking an experienced land use professional for the position of Principal Planner in the Land Use Review Division. As Principal Planner, you will manage the comprehensive review of discretionary land development applications in a large and expanding multifaceted community that is leading growth in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This position independently analyzes complex and large-scale land development applications and provides recommendations to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors regarding project consistency with adopted land use policies and ordinances. The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of land use planning and land development and will be able to coordinate with other departments and agencies, prioritize tasks, meet critical deadlines while autonomously managing multiple assignments, and present cohesive technical analysis to decision-makers. This position plays a large role in the implementation of the Loudoun County 2019 Comprehensive Plan and is part of the planning team that will guide the evolution of walkable urban places near the County's planned metro stations.
The successful candidate should have a minimum combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture, or a related field; four (4) years of related work experience in professional planning or a related field.
One (1) year of supervisory experience is preferred, but not required. Progressively responsible work experience at a level that required management of complex planning and land use projects is preferred. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is desired.
This position supervises a group of professional planners and requires strong interpersonal skills and a style that emphasizes diplomacy and a willingness to seek reasonable solutions. The ability to think strategically about operational and programmatic issues is essential. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to a variety of situations including frequent interactions with interdepartmental staff, applicants, top governmental officials, and citizens. Mentorship of fellow staff regarding effective project management, land planning, comprehensive planning, building and site design review, and cultural and resource preservation is expected.
Attendance and presentations at evening meetings and workshops after normal business hours is required.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of criminal, credit, and DMV background checks. Teleworking is an option after three months.
