Job Description

Loudoun County, Virginia, one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation, is currently seeking applicants for the position Planner III within the Department of Building and Development Land Development Division. Loudoun County is a large community in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area with diverse planning challenges and opportunities, from the development of transit-oriented urban neighborhoods around planned Metrorail stations, identifying and developing infill developments and maintaining the vibrant rural western portion of the County that is based in land conservation and agritourism.

The Land Development Division provides technical review and oversight of land development applications, manages performance and erosion and sediment control bonds, maintains land development records, provides professional guidance to other County agencies related to land development, and provides exemplary customer service.

Primary responsibilities of the Planner III include:

  • Reviewing complex land development applications and ensuring compliance with County regulations through written and digital correspondence with applicants
  • Providing technical expertise to the Department of Building and Development, other County Departments, and outside agencies
  • Delivering accurate and timely information to the public
  • Representing the Department of Building and Development at Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission meetings.

The successful candidate must have

  • The ability to analyze complex problems, navigate an intricate land development process, and perform a multitude of advanced professional planning tasks.
  • The ability to exercise independent judgment on work projects with minimal oversight is preferred.
  • Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to deliver presentations to local boards, commissions, and citizen groups is preferred.
  • An intermediate skill in using computers, and Microsoft Office.

Applicants must maintain a thorough knowledge of County operations, policies, and procedures; possess and maintain a thorough knowledge of County, State, and Federal land use regulations, principles, practices, and methodologies of the planning profession.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Planning, Management, Public Administration, Urban Management, Architecture, Business Administration, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or related field; three (3) years of related work experience in professional planning preferably in a government setting OR Master's degree in Planning, Management, Public Administration, Urban Management, Architecture, Business Administration, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or related field; including one (1) year of professional planning experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Must be available for occasional meetings after business hours with members of the public and/or elected officials.
