The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Business Tax Auditor. Auditors provide taxpayer services, daily, in a challenging environment that requires the ability to manage multiple audit reviews and tasks while meeting management initiatives. The successful candidate will perform work conducting audits and appeals with limited supervision which includes field work and taxpayer meetings. Auditors work in conjunction with compliance field officers and other county departments.
Successful candidates will have excellent research skills; the ability to interpret and apply local ordinances, state code and precedent set by legal cases, rulings and opinions; to apply tax assessments fairly, equitably, and uniformly. Auditors are required to respond to requests for information, utilize data provided by state and local resources to identify audit candidates, coordinate audit examinations, gather data, analyze business operations, tax returns, and other business records to ensure proper classification and assessment for business license tax, business personal property tax, and other taxes. Auditors must have the ability to develop and maintain detailed audit work papers and maintain confidentiality of tax information.
Successful candidates will display a competent understanding of or ability to learn Virginia Code as it pertains to local business taxes and the ability to interact confidently with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals to ensure local tax compliance and defend assessments. Auditors are required to participate in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws.
Hiring salary commensurate with experience
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Management, Finance or a related field and two (2) years of taxation or audit experience (three years of audit experience preferred.)
Must have exceptional writing, analytical, communication and accounting skills and familiarity with business structures and business income taxes (both Federal and Virginia). One (1) or more years' experience in local business taxation preferred. Must be an extremely well-organized problem solver with keen research skills and the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects. Must be flexible and have the ability to independently exercise good professional judgment. Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications. Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence.
