Job Description

The Natural Resources Division of the Department of Building and Development Is seeking candidates for a full-time Erosion & Sediment Control Engineering Technician.

This position requires thorough knowledge of County and State Erosion and Sediment Control laws and ordinances; thorough knowledge of County and State laws and ordinances pertaining to the Virginia Storm Water Management program; specific working knowledge of civil engineering and construction site management and civil engineering plans; general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, policies, computer programs, and equipment; ability to use automated systems and equipment; ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, County officials, contractors, and the public; and the ability to act independently using sound engineering judgment to solve problems and issues in the field or the office.

The job duties include but are not limited to:

- Review land development plans

- Conduct plan reviews in accordance with Virginia Erosion Sediment Control Standards & Specifications

- Manage erosion and sediment control enforcement per the Virginia Erosion Sediment Control Laws

- Complete erosion and sediment control and storm water compliance inspections

Job Requirements

Associate degree; two (2) years of related work experience preferably related to stormwater, management, engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants currently holding certifications of Combined Administrator Erosion Sediment Control and VSMP Inspector through the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are preferred.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license and good driving record is required. The applicant must pass the certification exam for Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector within six (6) months of employment and achieve Plan Reviewer Certification or Combined Administrator Certification within 2 years of employment. The applicant must pass the certification exam for the Virginia Storm Water Management Inspector within (12) months of employment.

This position may require some on call or subject to call duty during the hurricane season or during unusual storm events. The applicant must be able to inspect active construction projects, often requiring significant walking or crawling through tight spaces and climbing into manhole structures. Working in an outdoor environment during various types of weather conditions (hot or cold).
