The Loudoun County Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking an analytical, research-oriented, and organized individual to join the Office's Compliance Division as a Compliance Officer I.
The position requires the use of discovery methods including, but not limited to, visits to commercial centers and construction sites in the County to ensure that all businesses are on the County's tax rolls.
The successful candidate will utilize excellent customer service skills while interacting with business owners, or their representatives, to obtain information, counsel on proper filing procedures, and ensure that business owners understand local tax obligations. In addition to field visits, the position also requires the use of excellent investigative and analytical skills to utilize data obtained from a variety of sources to discover unregistered businesses. The individual will research, interpret, and apply Virginia tax code, case law, and local ordinances to ensure that businesses are assessed fairly, equitably, and uniformly. Position requires interaction with office management and the Treasurer's Office as collections, bankruptcy, and tax appeal issues dictate.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree preferably in Business, Management, Finance or related field and one (1) year of related work experience with automated systems and customer service preferably in taxation or finance.
Knowledge of business structures, state and federal taxes, business procedures, and accounting functions is highly desirable. Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills to interact with business owners and their accountants and attorneys. Must be self-motivated, flexible, and able to multitask. Will attend business taxation classes to remain familiar with current assessment issues and laws. Position requires extensive work with computer systems to research and prepare for field work requirements. The successful candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and basic computer skills.
Must maintain a valid driver's license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications. Must have the ability to tour commercial facilities of all types. Familiarity with business operations in Loudoun County or local tax compliance experience is preferred.
