Job Description

The Loudoun County Department of Planning & Zoning is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Principal Planner in the Community Planning Division. As Principal Planner, you will primarily support the implementation of the County's land use and planning policies as laid out in the Loudoun County 2019 Comprehensive Plan. The Principal Planner will lead and manage the work of a team of professional planners, overseeing the quality and timeliness of the team's work while promoting best practices in land use and design. This position will also be responsible for reviewing complex land development proposals for consistency with County policy and serve as project manager for area plans, comprehensive plan amendments, and special planning studies. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively with an array of stakeholders, meet deadlines, and maintain product quality while managing multiple assignments.

Job Requirements

Master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture, or a related field; four (4) years of related work experience in professional planning or a related field including one (1) year of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

The candidate's resume should demonstrate progressively responsible work experience managing complex planning projects and overseeing the work of others. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is preferred. This position requires strong interpersonal skills and a style that emphasizes diplomacy and the willingness to seek reasonable solutions. The ability to think strategically about operational and programmatic issues is essential. This position also requires strong writing and verbal communication skills and the ability to mentor staff and provide guidance on land use planning, environmental planning, and urban design principles. Other preferred qualifications include working familiarity with the local planning authority and land-use practices in Virginia, rural area planning and land conservation measures, zoning, affordable housing, and historic preservation.

Hiring Range: $77,732.01- $108,824.82

Salary Commensurate with Experience

Special Requirements

Attendance at occasional night meetings after normal business hours is expected.
