Job Description

The Loudoun County Commonwealth Attorney's Office seeks a full-time Assistant Commonwealth Attorney. The selected candidate will be responsible for the management and prosecution of cases in the Juvenile and Domestic, General District and Circuit Courts.

Under the general direction of the designated supervisor, the Assistant Commonwealth Attorney prosecutes cases for the Commonwealth, and represents the Commonwealth in legal proceedings. Duties include advising law enforcement regarding charging documents, reviewing evidentiary documents, issuing subpoenas, interviewing and preparing witnesses, performing legal research, responding to pre-trial and post-trial motions, conducting trial strategy, coordination with the victim-witness case manager, litigating cases – bench and jury trials, sentencing hearings, probation violation hearings, show cause hearings, and post-trial appeals.

The selected applicant must be capable of: managing a heavy caseload; skilled at legal research and writing; able to work both independently and collaboratively in an office that values integrity, civility, initiative, sound judgment and skilled advocacy.

Job Requirements

Requires a Juris Doctor Degree (JD) from an accredited law school and a license to practice in Virginia; one year of experience as a licensed practicing attorney with jury trial experience or operational/transactional/administrative experience in legal field.

Special Requirements

Must be licensed to practice law in Virginia or eligible for membership. Must be a member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar (ability to obtain a waiver of admission within a reasonable time is also acceptable, but should not to exceed four (4) months). Continue legal education annually.
