Introduction

The Loudoun County Judges in Leesburg, VA are currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Staff Attorney.

Job Description

Duties include:  Legal research and analysis; drafting legal opinions, memoranda, and correspondence, review of evidence, pleadings and briefs, statutes, case law and treatises.

  • Conducts complex legal research and performs analysis of facts and legal issues to arrive at a reasonable conclusion in relation to cases before the court;
  • Drafts court opinions for publication or prepares memoranda recommending action on motions or petitions;
  • Drafts or writes letters for the court advising parties of action taken or directed by the court.
  • Reviews, edits and prepares draft opinions for judges' consideration;
  • Ability to organize and manage own work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of tasks simultaneously;
  • Strong sense of professionalism;
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with court personnel, attorneys, the local bar association and the public; Confers informally with judges, other staff attorneys and legal specialists on work in progress;
  • Participates in department meetings with Circuit Court Judges and staff;
  • Meets with the Lead Staff Attorney to discuss all cases under review and adherence to guidelines with respect to quality and timeliness.

Job Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree with  minimum 1 year experience as a Licensed Practicing Attorney 
  • Licensed to practice law in Virginia or eligible for membership
  • Legal writing experience
  • Good, practical, analytical legal research and writing abilities
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of on-line legal research tools, Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
