Recruitment #20-A1-0245

Job Description

Loudoun County is about to open the first public shelter in the US to meet 100% of the ASV Animal Shelter Guidelines- are you ready to join the team? We are looking for a progressive, compassionate veterinarian to oversee and provide medical care for our brand new, state of the art animal shelter (opening summer/fall 2020 in Leesburg, Virginia).

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) staff place an emphasis on complete health for the animals in our custody and seek a veterinarian who recognizes the importance of enrichment and mental health care to ensure that we are providing the ideal experience to the animals at our shelter. Loudoun is fortunate to have a low local disease incidence and low per capita animal intakes, with about 2,400 pets receiving shelter each year and our new veterinarian will be able to develop their own protocols for handling surgery, common illnesses, and preventative care. LCAS also takes animal welfare seriously in the community and our veterinarian will have the opportunity to assist our humane law enforcement team, addressing animal welfare violations throughout the legal process, from clinic to courtroom!

General responsibilities include:

  • Spay/neuter of shelter pets, approximately 450 surgeries annually (51% cats, 38% dogs, 11% rabbits). Performance of common surgical and dental procedures.
  • Oversight and execution of medical protocols and licenses.
  • Management of population health using progressive, research-based shelter medicine methods.
  • Diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning for animals in shelter custody.
  • Oversight of public vaccination clinics, currently held five times a year.
  • Collection of forensic evidence, including necropsies, for animals involved in cases of suspected cruelty.

LCAS has a 93% live release rate, and while animals who are dangerous or suffering may be euthanized, this task is rarely performed by the staff veterinarian. Annual compassion fatigue training is provided to all staff, and the position is provided with a suite of excellent benefits. Interviews for this position are being held now, with the intention for a new veterinarian to join the team in June 2020 as we prepare to open our new facility and clinic.
