Job Description

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Business Tax Auditor.

The successful candidate will perform difficult professional work conducting field and desk audits with limited supervision; research, interpret and apply local, state and case law, and rulings and opinions to administer tax programs fairly, equitably and uniformly; respond to requests for information, appeals and litigation; plan and coordinate audit examinations; gather data and analyze business operations, tax returns, and other business records to ensure proper classification and assessment for business license, business tangible personal property, excise and other local taxes; interact confidently with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals to ensure local tax compliance and defend assessments; develop and maintain detailed audit work papers; utilize data provided by state and local resources for discovery purposes; maintain confidentiality of tax information; participate in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws; and provide court testimony as necessary.

The successful candidate will provide excellent taxpayer service in a challenging and fast-paced work environment; work with office management and Treasurer’s and County Attorney’s office personnel as collection, bankruptcy, appeal, and litigation issues dictate; mentor other auditors or compliance field officers.

Job Requirements

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Finance or a related field and three (3) years of taxation or audit experience. Must have exceptional writing, analytical, communication and accounting skills and familiarity with business structures and business income taxes (both Federal and Virginia). Must be an extremely well-organized problem solver with keen research skills and the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects. Must be flexible and have the ability to independently exercise good professional judgment. Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of criminal background, driving, and credit check. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in Virginia or regional state of residence.
