The Loudoun County Department of Planning and Zoning is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Principal Planner in the Community Planning Section. As Principal Planner, you will play a vital role in the development of future land use policies and strategic planning initiatives related to urban design, housing, and green infrastructure. The position will also manage the quality and timeliness of work by other planners in the Community Planning Section while overseeing the review of legislative land use applications relative to comprehensive plan policies. The Principal Planner will lead and manage the work of a team of professional planners and serve as project manager for plans, plan amendments, or special planning studies. Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively with an array of stakeholders, meet deadlines, and maintain product quality while managing multiple assignments. The Principal Planner will also review development proposals for consistency with County policy and promote best practices in land use and design to produce higher quality developments. Successful candidates must exhibit excellent writing, presentation and analytical skills as well as senior-level knowledge of comprehensive planning, land use planning, project management, architectural/urban design principles, zoning, transportation planning, sustainable building/development, historic and cultural resource management, and environmental planning.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in planning or related field (architecture, public administration, landscape architecture, etc.) and two (2) years of professional land use planning or urban design experience. Preferred qualifications include American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification and a minimum of two years of supervisory experience. Other preferred qualifications include experience in local government planning organizations, urban design, neighborhood and community planning, managing/facilitating long-range planning projects, and knowledge of planning and land use practices in Virginia.
Some attendance at night meetings after normal business hours is expected.
