The Loudoun County, Virginia Department of Planning & Zoning is seeking an experienced professional to help implement adopted land use regulations and performance standards in a large and expanding multifaceted community that is leading growth in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This position independently analyzes proposed development projects and provides comments and solutions to colleagues and applicants on compliance with the Zoning Ordinance. The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of zoning, land use planning and development and will be able to draft official correspondence and determinations, meet deadlines while autonomously managing multiple assignments, and provide cohesive technical analysis about development applications. Through performance of these core responsibilities, this position will actively contribute to implementation of the newly adopted Loudoun County 2019 General Plan, to include the evolution of walkable urban places near the County’s metro stations.
Requires education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Public Administration, Real Estate, Public Policy, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Geography, Engineering, Economic Development, Political Science or Law and three years direct work experience, including professional analysis and technical writing. Progressively responsible work experience at a level that required some project management is preferred.
This position requires an analytical thinker with real-world experience in zoning, land planning, building and site design review, and/or resource preservation. The ability to manage a high case load, prioritize tasks and meet critical deadlines is required. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to a variety of situations including frequent interactions with staff, applicants, and citizens. Attendance at occasional night meetings may be required.

The County has alternatives to fit your desired temporary work interests for this position:
- One vacancy for a Temporary Planner III, 37.5 hours a week, two years in duration, and
- Another vacancy for a Temporary Planner III, 30 hours a week, that ends June 30th, 2020.
There is potential that the end date will be extended, or the position made permanent. Both of these positions will receive partial benefits. A valid driver’s license and driving record check is required. Teleworking is an option after successful completion of probationary period.
