Job Description

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue in Loudoun County Virginia is seeking a professional with real estate appraisal and ad valorem experience for the position of Appraiser I.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assesses residential properties within assigned groups in accordance to Virginia Code and professional standards.
  • Responsible for the equitable and uniform assessment of properties as assigned.
  • Conducts field review of assigned properties to ensure accurate up-to-date information in the County’s Mass Appraisal system.
  • Review and analyze sale data for assigned properties. Ensure that all construction permits are managed within department standards and assessed accordingly.
  • Provide customer service to property owners or representatives regarding the assessment process, valuation or other real estate assessment related issues.
  • Defend assessed values at Board of Equalization hearings or other administrative hearings as assigned.
  • Participates in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws and professional appraisal standards.

Job Requirements

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of real estate appraisal or assessment experience required. Familiarity with Virginia’s local tax structure. Familiarity with computer automated mass appraisal systems (Prefer experience with Tyler Technologies’ IasWorld). Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Analytical skills (research skills). Planning and organization. Solid written and verbal communication skills. Must be flexible and have the ability to independently exercise good professional judgment.

Professional designation in real estate appraisal or real estate assessment offered by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation or professional organizations such as the International Association of Assessing Officers is preferred.

Special Requirements

Ability to work in various outdoor weather conditions, traverse undeveloped land and tour construction sites. Occasional bending, stooping and light lifting may be required.

Successful candidate will undergo criminal background, credit, and DMV record checks. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in Virginia or regional state of residence. Employees are prohibited from participating in any outside activity, including private appraisals, which may be deemed a conflict of interest by the Commissioner of the Revenue.
