Definition

Assists in a variety of recreational activities for school-age children in a youth camp program.

Typical Duties

Assists in implementation and supervision of activities in a youth camp program.

Assists in providing experiences to promote physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of children.

Leads children in creative activities including songs, indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts, hikes, and field trips.

Organizes, sets up, and puts away equipment and materials as needed.

Monitors and enforces safety rules and appropriate standards of behavior.

Observes children’s health and reports any signs of illness or other distress to an appropriate supervisor.

Provides routine information to parents about the youth program.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

A Youth Camp Assistant assists in a variety of recreational activities for school-age children in a youth camp program. Youth camp programs typically run during the summer months.

An Event Assistant performs basic support duties for a college athletics, physical education, or community services program.

Supervision

Immediate supervision is received from a classified or academic supervisor. No supervision is exercised.

Class Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Practices and methods of supervision of school-age children

Recreational activities related to a youth camp program

Proper storage and care of equipment and materials

Safety practices and procedures related to a youth camp program

Ability to:

Supervise recreational activities of school-age children

Secure and store camp equipment

Give clear and concise instructions

Follow written and oral instructions

Work effectively and cooperatively with children, parents, and staff

Entrance Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Experience working in a youth day camp setting is desirable.
