Is detail-oriented, with a sound knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading. Has considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations/media relations strategy development. Is able to mobilize a team, building momentum to get things done through clear and consistent communication. Is able to write and edit news releases and articles. Excels at writing and planning media pitches. Is able to create and manage custom digital content. Possesses a thorough understanding of the local, regional, and national media markets and respects deadlines. Is able to use considerable initiative, think independently, and exercise sound judgment. Is able to handle extremely delicate/sensitive relationships and complex situations, information, and materials. Has a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, influencers, and target audiences. Possesses a working knowledge of SEO.  Is able to manage content and program development end-to-end. Has considerable knowledge of crisis communication strategy and execution.    

JOB OVERVIEW

The Senior Media Relations Strategist: Develops and strategizes media relations campaigns and strategies related to special events, programs, and County initiatives. Provides public and media relations management and training to departments, including counsel related to public and media relations strategies, communication plans, social media, and events. Provides strategic guidance for the online newsroom on behalf of the media relations team. Develops strategic and proactive media relations plans and outreach with tactics such as news releases, pitches, collateral development, web content/brand journalism, and overall messaging. Provides media relations and expert guidance to departments. Responds to media in an efficient and timely manner. Prepares recommendations involving special community matters, public meetings, events, and programs. Tracks, monitors, and evaluates activities, placements and accomplishments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree:  

And  

Five years of experience planning, implementing, or managing media relations, public relations, community relations, marketing, integrated communications programs. Media management or crisis communications response.  

Or  

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job specific competencies.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

          JOB SPECIFICATIONS

          • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations/media relations strategy development and how it relates to positive public/media relations.
          • Knowledge of writing and editing press releases, positioning stories, pitches, articles and other communications materials.
          • Knowledge of photography and an understanding of visual standards, and working knowledge of storytelling through photos and the applications of visual standards.
          • Knowledge and understanding of the Public Relations profession Code of Ethics.
          • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and proofreading.
          • Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and target audiences.
          • Thorough understanding of the local media market.
          • Skill to create content for public relations collateral including brand journalism content.
          • Strong copywriting and editorial skills.
          • Ability to engage a diverse team of professional employees, and partners in developing goals, executing plans, and delivering results.
          • Ability to mobilize teams, building momentum to get things done by communicating clearly and consistently.
          • Ability to use negotiation skills and adaptability to encourage recognition of joint concerns, collaboration, and to influence the success of outcomes.
          • Ability to manage content and program development end-to-end providing direction, working integrated across departments and within the Communications & Digital Media team.
