JOB OVERVIEW

Performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water/reclaimed water distribution systems or wastewater collection systems to include the installation, maintenance and repair of valves, meters, pumps and associated equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and

 

Three years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of water or reclaimed water distribution systems or wastewater collection systems.

 

Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and

 

Possession of a State of Florida Class III or higher Distribution System Operator License; and

 

Possession of a valid Class B, Commercial Driver License (CDL).

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
  • Makes major repairs to various types of water, reclaimed water or wastewater lines to include laying and caulking pipe, cutting pipe, tapping mains and service lines, installing and setting meters, and flushing and evacuating clogged wastewater lines to maintain a high service level to customers.
  • Performs skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of valves, meters, gauges, pumps, and associated equipment used in water or reclaimed water distribution systems or wastewater collection systems in accordance with prescribed specifications and procedures.
  • Locates and marks location of water, reclaimed water and wastewater lines to prevent damage during construction and digging operations.
  • Operates equipment such as air hammers, boring machine, air compressors, pipe pushers, hand tools, pumps, torches, and drills to perform maintenance of water, reclaimed water or wastewater lines.
  • Operates light to medium construction equipment such as a dozer, 690 excavator, minitrack excavator, case loader, transport truck with trailer or tanker, backhoe, dump truck, jet truck, and pickup truck.
  • Oversees the work of and trains lower level employees.
  • Excavates work site as required to facilitate installation, maintenance or repair of water, reclaimed water or wastewater lines and restores site to original condition when work is complete.
  • May operate TV inspection equipment to locate damage or clogs in lines.
  • May operate VAC truck to clear obstructions in gravity mains and suction debris from lines.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to and after use, including checking fluid levels and tire pressures, to ensure their safe and proper operation.
  • Performs grounds keeping and custodial work as required.
  • Reads water meters when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SOME POSITIONS

Possession of a State of Florida Class II Distribution System Operator License no later than July 31, 2011.
