Performs supervisory or skilled duties in monitoring in-door air quality and in the operation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment.


Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and

Four years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment which includes two years of in-door air quality monitoring and testing.

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and

Possession of an In-door Air Quality Association certificate.

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of in-door air quality monitoring and sampling techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of HVAC safety requirements.
  • Considerable knowledge of the electrical aspects of HVAC equipment.
  • Skill in using in-door air quality test equipment.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret laboratory air quality test results.
  • Ability to prepare complete and comprehensive reports that identify the in-door air quality problems and to provide a recommendation to resolve the problem.

  • Conducts complex tests of indoor air quality in response to complaints.
  • Reviews and interprets laboratory test results, and recommends possible solutions.
  • Coordinates with environmental consulting firms to assess and resolve in-door air quality problems.
  • Supervises the work of subordinate staff performing in-door air quality testing by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
  • Troubleshoots HVAC systems to determine cause of malfunctions.
  • Tests condenser water conditions and adjusts chemical feed as necessary.
  • Monitors construction on new heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems to ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications.
  • Keeps daily records and logs on operating conditions and repairs to electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Prepares and schedules preventive maintenance programs.
  • Requisitions material and equipment for mechanical and electrical maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Possession of an EPA Approved Certified Technician Certificate (Class II or higher) to manage freon within the probationary period.
