Operates and monitors mini and mainframe computers and peripheral equipment such as tape drives, disk drives and printers to process data. Supervises and trains lower level computer operators.


A Bachelor's degree in Geography or Math; and
One year of experience in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) programming or systems analysis.

  • Considerable knowledge of mini or mainframe computer operating consoles and common peripheral equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods and procedures employed in monitoring mini and mainframe computer operations and correcting error conditions.
  • Considerable knowledge of data processing terminology.
  • Considerable knowledge of care of peripheral equipment for mini or mainframe computers.
  • Knowledge of on-line tape library systems.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical computer manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to train and supervise subordinate personnel.
  • Ability to determine and correct system problems.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts.
  • Ability to lift and carry cartons of paper, up to 60 pounds in weight.

  • Sets computers and peripheral equipment control switches to operate according to programs, routines and data requirements as specified in written operating instructions.
  • Monitors computer console peripherals, and control panels for error lights, error messages, machine stoppage and faulty output, and to verify the quality of printouts.
  • Acts as console operator making variable entries to the processing unit via keyin.
  • Sets up jobs to be run on computer and assists in handling coordination of input and output with control section.
  • Operates tape and disk drives by loading and unloading magnetic tapes, labeling and filing; or assigning track space as applicable.
  • Operates high speed printer, console and hot printer, sets up spacing, margins, replacing paper, ribbon and cleaning equipment.
  • Identifies system problems and records information, notifying supervisor for repairs.
  • Prepares inventory records of data processing supplies and forms.
  • Supervises and trains Computer Operators.
  • In the absence of shift supervisor, assumes responsibility for shift operations.
  • Manages machine times to ensure accurate and efficient running of jobs.
  • Monitors teleprocessing network and assists users in the absence of a telecommunications technician.
  • May lift and carry tapes, disc packs and cartons of paper.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
