JOB OVERVIEW

Performs supervisory duties coordinating the specialized transportation needs of transportation disadvantaged clients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and

Two years of experience scheduling or dispatching vehicles; or

Two years of work experience operating a bus, mini-bus, a van transporting passengers or a light passenger vehicle for hire.

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the functions, activities, requirements and objectives of the Specialized Transportation Program and related assistance programs.
  • Working knowledge of the use and operation of computer aided dispatch and communication systems.
  • Working knowledge of basic vehicle mechanical functions and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of disabilities of eligible clients and related transportation needs.
  • Working knowledge of Hillsborough County roads, streets and traffic patterns.
  • Skill in the use of computer aided dispatch and two way radio systems.
  • Skill in the application of first aid and CPR.
  • Ability to plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Ability to analyze and modify routes to maximize operational efficiency.
  • Ability to foresee and resolve problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
  • Supervises the work of subordinate staff by assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance.
  • Responds to and investigates accidents, incidents and complaints involving drivers or clients and takes or recommends corrective action.
  • Arranges operation and maintenance schedules to maximize vehicle availability.
  • Researches, maintains and prepares reports concerning vehicle usage, maintenance history, client information and driver performance.
  • Substitutes for Dispatcher or Minibus Driver as required.
  • Coordinates with dispatchers, drivers and schedulers to alter routes and schedules.
  • Operates computer aided dispatch system to enter and retrieve
  • Coordinates with outside vendors for installation, repair, inspection or replacement of wheelchair lifts.
  • Coordinates evacuation of special needs clients in the event of an emergency.
  • Attends State training programs, testing programs, first aid courses and other seminars in order to train staff on new or revised Paratransit procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
