JOB OVERVIEW

Performs duties stenotyping instantaneous verbatim translation and display of spoken dialogue to a television monitor utilizing computer aided translation software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Graduation from any Court Reporter Program; and
Six months of experience performing Real-Time Court Reporting or Real-Time Closed Captioning. 
 

Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below.

  • Working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Working knowledge of the functions, services, procedures and regulations of the unit or department to which assigned.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Provides realtime writing of spoken dialogue using computerized stenotype equipment for closedcaption television.
  • Builds and maintains a personal dictionary in the computer to provide for rapid translation of spoken dialogue to written word.
  • Researches subject related material and previous written scripts to expand the dictionary.
  • Maintains computerized stenotype equipment and updates of computer software.
  • Reads live transcription and adds new names, words and phrases to the dictionary to assist the captioner performing realtime captioning.
  • Maintains appropriate records and performance logs for each captioning session to identify problems and improve the captioning process.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
