JOB OVERVIEW

Performs work as a lead inspector with advanced technical knowledge inspecting building construction or the installation of plumbing, electrical, or gas systems or mechanical equipment or reviewing and interpreting approved plans and specifications for compliance with state and county codes, laws and ordinances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. Certificate; and

Five years of experience as a licensed Inspector under Chapter 468 of the Florida Statutes with at least one year in a supervisory capacity; and One year experience reviewing construction plans for compliance with the Florida Building Codes and Hillsborough County’s Construction Ordinance.  

Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and  

Possession of a related standard Plans Examiner License issued under Chapter 468 of the Florida Statutes; and Possession of a valid Driver License.

  • Working knowledge of OSHA construction site safety requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, diagrams, blueprints, and specifications.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on the assigned area of responsibility incumbents in this position may perform some or all of the duties described below.
  • Inspects building construction or the installation of plumbing, electrical, or gas systems or mechanical equipment for compliance with state and county codes, laws and ordinances.
  • Reviews plans and specifications submitted for building permits, checking for compliance with existing State of Florida Building Codes and Hillsborough County Construction Ordinance.
  • May supervise subordinates by planning, assigning, directing and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance to ensure that all work activities are carried out properly and in accordance with governing directives. 
  • Furnishes technical advice and information to field and office personnel within the limits of authority assigned by the Chief Inspector or Building Official.
  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts training courses for field Inspectors when so directed.
  • Issues citations or notices of violation for non-compliance of Florida Building Codes or Hillsborough County Construction Ordinance.
  • Testifies before the Board of Adjustment and Appeals or in a court of law when subpoenaed.
  • Prepares and maintains technical records and reports; does other clerical and administrative work.
  • Performs as Chief Inspector in the absence of the Chief Inspector
  • Inputs and retrieves data in researching violations and scheduling inspections.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SOME POSITIONS

Employees to maintain the continuing education as required by the state.
