JOB OVERVIEW

Performs supervisory duties patrolling and protecting swimming patrons and enforcing rules and regulations at aquatic and open water swimming areas, and collecting entry and other related fees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from High School or possession of a GED Certification; and
Two years of experience as a lifeguard.

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and
Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate; and
Possession of a valid Driver License.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  • Considerable knowledge of American Red Cross lifeguard training methods and techniques, aquatics safety procedures and actions, First Aid and CPR techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of individual and team recreational aquatic sports programs including rules, strategy and equipment use.
  • Working knowledge of county and departmental policies, rules and regulations, pertaining to the operation of county aquatic facilities.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Skill in administering First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Ability to swim.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Supervises the work of subordinate staff by assigning and reviewing work; providing training and counseling; developing work schedules; and evaluating performance.
  • Conducts American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training classes for assigned lifeguard personnel and the general public.
  • Provides patron surveillance of swimming areas to enforce established policies, procedures and rules to ensure the safety and well being of patrons.
  • Rescues distressed swimmers and drowning victims and provides First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as needed.
  • Performs maintenance tasks such as painting and minor repair of boardwalks, docks and fences; rototills beach sand; and performs basic groundskeeping duties.
  • Cleans and resupplies restrooms and shelters; collects and disposes of trash.
  • Submits equipment requisitions and purchases routine supplies and materials.
  • Prepares, submits and maintains reports, time and attendance sheets, and safety check records.
  • Travels to various locations to provide training.
  • Collects entry and other related fees.¬†
  • Performs other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SOME POSITIONS

A background investigation upon initial hiring or promotion. Successful completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certificate within six months of the probationary period.
