JOB OVERVIEW

Performs duties developing and updating maps and other graphic material using the Geographic Information System (GIS) or other mapping/cartographic computer software and hardware.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
One year of computerized or manual map drawing experience;
OR

Fifteen (15) semester hours from an accredited college or university in computerized mapping, computerized drafting, computer programming, cartography and/or GIS, with at least nine (9) semester hours in computerized mapping, cartography and/or GIS; OR

Successful completion of a Vocational or Technical Training Program in computerized mapping, cartography or GIS.

Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

    • Working knowledge of cartographic techniques.
    • Working knowledge of computers.
    • Some knowledge of land codes and surveying practices.
    • Skill in the use and operation of computers and peripheral equipment such as digitizers, plotters and drafting instruments.
    • Ability to read and interpret aerial photographs, maps, deeds and legal descriptions.
    • Ability to work effectively with others.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
    • Creates, updates, and digitizes GIS layers to maintain an accurate geodatabase to ensure accuracy, and produce hard copies of maps.
    • Researches deeds and legal descriptions to clarify data; notes discrepancies in various mapping data and recommends corrective action.
    • Produces manual and/or digital cadastral, infrastructural, environmental, points of interest and various other data as needed for maps utilizing survey notes, legal descriptions and other recorded instruments; and assigns symbology to appropriate maps.
    • Assists in manual and/or digital organization, inventorying and locating maps to ensure accessibility.
    • Interprets aerials to identify basic road building footprints and various other visual ground features to update database maps.
    • Verifies proposed mapping coordinates and boundaries by using geometric mathematical formulas and updates databases.
    • Performs other related duties as related.
