JOB OVERVIEW

Performs duties operating a large semi-tractor trailer and other motorized equipment and vehicles used in public works projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of the ninth grade; and
One year of experience in the operation of a semi-tractor trailer transport.
Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
  • Operates large semi-tractor trailer motorized vehicles in constricted loading/unloading locations, on unimproved roads, and on heavily traveled roads and highways; construction and maintenance equipment such as transport/cargo vehicles, tandems, miniwheelers, front driver telescopes or bantam cranes, street sweepers, slope mowers, lowboy equipment, single chassis, dual drive, and dual chassis automotive equipment, and other similar heavy equipment to perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Operates hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical auxiliary equipment related to assigned tractors and trailers.
  • Transports and supervises the loading and unloading of special and heavy equipment and cargo to construction sites.
  • May operate construction equipment incidental to loading and unloading trailers.
  • May supervise subordinate operators, trades helpers, or laborers or act as a lead driver.
  • Checks and ensures that equipment is serviced and in good working condition; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, and ensures that periodic maintenance and major repairs are performed.
  • Performs daily safety inspections and observes proper safety practices and regulations when operating or working around equipment.
  • Assists with manual work in construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, parks, drains, sewers, and other public works projects; sets flags and barricades; may operate air compressors and hammers, mixers, pumping equipment, and saws at construction job sites.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
