JOB OVERVIEW

Performs duties operating a wide variety of motorized equipment used in public works projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of the ninth grade; and

One year of experience in the operation of motorized equipment.

Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and

Possession of a valid Driver License.

  • Working knowledges of traffic laws and regulations applicable to the operation of motorized construction, maintenance, and transport equipment on public streets and highways.

  • Ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.
  • Operates motorized equipment such as transport/cargo vehicles, tandems, front driver telescopes or bantam cranes, street sweepers, slope mowers, lowboy equipment, single chassis, dual drive, and dual chassis automotive equipment and other similar heavy equipment to perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Transports and supervises the loading and unloading of special and heavy equipment and cargo to construction sites.
  • Checks and ensures the equipment is serviced and in good working condition; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, and ensures that periodic maintenance and major repairs are performed.
  • Performs daily safety inspections and observes proper safety practices and regulations when operating or working around equipment.
  • Assists with manual work and construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, parks, drains, sewers, and other public works projects; sets flags and barricades; may operate air compressors and hammers, mixers and plumbing equipment at construction job sites.
  • Acts as lead operator; may supervise lower level operators, trades helpers, laborers on specific tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
