Drafting Technician (#DRFTTCAG08) AG08

Reviews rough sketches, drawings, specifications and other data, and drafts detailed survey drawings, construction drawings, topographical profiles and related maps and specifications used in planning and construction of engineering projects, all types of surveys, for flood control maps, and drainage studies.


  • Graduation from an high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND        
  • One (1) year of experience in drafting and computer aided design;
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted below.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.


An employee in this class is responsible for drafting assignments involving portrayal of basic surveying and engineering ideas and information through drawings. Work is of average difficulty and involves the use of graphic portrayal techniques, methods, and procedures in documenting and communicating basic surveying and engineering information from survey notes, sketches, marked-up prints and instructions.

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:       

  • Participates in the preparation of computer aided drawings of detailed surveying and engineering designs, maps, structures, and equipment.   
  • Drafts detailed drawings of structures and installations, such as roads, culverts, fresh water supply, sewage disposal systems, dikes, wharfs, and breakwaters.       
  •  Plots maps and charts showing profiles and cross-sections, indicating relation of topographical contours and elevations to buildings, retaining walls, tunnels, overhead power lines, and other structures.      
  • Schedules, and monitors the preparation of working drawings for such projects as water lines, streets construction, sewer or drainage projects, and right-of-way and easement acquisitions.
  • Checks drawings for neatness, clarity, and accurate portrayal of the design.       
  • Participates in meetings to discuss projects and construction plans.       
  • Coordinates utility records data with other agencies.      
  • Collects and interprets engineering data; establishes and maintains filing and records keeping systems.       
  • Applies standard formulas to calculate area, distance, grade, elevations, etc.       
  • May accompany survey crew in field to locate grading markers or to collect data required for revision of construction drawings.       
  • Performs mathematical calculations to prepare reports and complete work projects; acts as team leader on a project basis.       
  • Performs related work as required.


  • Knowledge of basic drafting techniques, including a limited number of standardized drawing techniques; computer aided design; symbols, terminology and accepted standards used in preparing survey and engineering drawings; systems of the particular field of engineering to which assigned; charting and graphing procedures and practices.       
  • Knowledge of legal terminology used in property descriptions; computer assisted drafting systems.       
  • Ability to make mathematical computations using standardized tables and formulas.     
  • Ability to prepare drawings that are neat, accurate, appropriately dimensioned, and logically arranged utilizing the methods and techniques of survey and engineering drafting.       
  • Ability to print neatly and legibly, in accordance with good survey and engineering lettering practices.      
  • Ability to prepare drawings from survey notes, plats, and legal descriptions; prepare as-built drawings and blueprints; adjust/transpose drawings to scale; verify accuracy of data against source documents; understand and follow oral and written instructions/standardized procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.     
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public.
  • Skill in the use and care of drafting tools, materials and equipment; computer aided design equipment.
