Community Collection Ctr Attendant (#CYCNCAAFSE) AFSE

Performs semi-skilled duties controlling traffic, operating a weighing scale, and inspecting solid waste materials for proper dumping in accordance with applicable laws and regulations to control environmental impact.


Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
One year of experience involving toll or weigh station collecting, cashiering, or in solid waste recycling and field operations.

  • Considerable Knowledge of solid waste and recycling methods, procedures and equipment.
  • Considerable Knowledge of chemical incompatibilities and ability to recognize indicators of unstable chemicals through visual inspection.
  • Working Knowledge of environmental impact of hazardous waste on ground water, surface water, and air quality.
  • Working Knowledge of environmental related codes, laws, ordinances, rules and regulations affecting Solid Waste Management operations.
  • Working Knowledge of D.O.T. requirements for hazardous waste.
  • Working Knowledge of first aid and CPR.
  • Working Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations controlling the processing of official record documents, fees and fiscal record keeping.
  • Some knowledge of safety procedures and safety equipment. 
  • Skill in the use and operations of commercial weight scales.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to sort chemicals into proper waste categories.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to handle cash transactions.
  • Ability to maintain work related records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel or crouch at ground levels.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in a subtropical climate under adverse weather conditions and high noise levels.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies, and maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to adjust, maintain and calibrate commercial scales.

  • Directs vehicle operators as they enter facility, aids vehicle operators in positioning vehicles on scales, and records gross and empty weights.
  • Inspects vehicle cargos to ensure materials to be discharged do not violate applicable laws, rules, and/or regulations.
  • Records service fees on vouchers, determines if transactions are cash or charge, and completes receipts.
  • Transports receipts to bank or departmental office for deposit as directed.
  • Maintains various records and reports as required.
  • Maintains recycling drop-off sites by policing for litter, mowing and other landscaping maintenance tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
