JOB OVERVIEW

Performs entry level clerical-accounting work while learning the methods, processes and procedures of clerical accounting work.  The work is performed under close supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Six months of experience in bookkeeping, financial record keeping or cashiering; or
Successful completion of a vocational/technical course in bookkeeping, financial record keeping or cashiering.

Or
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted below.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

A passing score on multiple-choice test number 86.

A passing score on a data entry test at 100 gross keystrokes per minute with 90% accuracy.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.

Note: Incumbents function in a trainee capacity to gain proficiency in the duties listed below and become eligible for promotion to Accounting Clerk II.

  • Prepares, reviews, processes, and/or maintains purchase orders, requisitions, check requests, field orders, change orders and other accounting or fiscal documents, records and files.
  • Codes fiscal documents for posting into automated accounting system.
  • Assists with posting basic transactions to proper accounts.
  • Assists in compiling data for basic fiscal reports and statements.
  • Prepares periodic summary reports.
  • Assists with the reconciliation and balancing of financial statements and accounting records.
  • Receives funds, prepares deposits, and reconciles bank statements.
    Composes correspondence and prepares basic spreadsheets.
  • Performs related work as required.

SPECIAL PROBATIONARY NOTE

Employees in this class are required to complete a six month training program as defined by the agency to which the position is assigned.  Upon certification by the Agency Head or designated representative of successful completion of training, incumbents will be promoted to Accounting Clerk II. The training period may be extended by the Agency to which the position is assigned.
