The Hillsborough County Public Works Department is seeking a Traffic Sign/Marking Technician to assist maintenance crews in maintaining and preserving traffic operational assets, such as street lights, street signs, pavement markings, and signalization control boxes. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work along side busy roadways performing manual labor in outside environment, exposed to heat, sun, high humidity, rain and other adverse weather conditions. Candidate will walk/stand for prolonged periods of time (approximately six (6) hours) per day. Candidate may work non-standard hours such as 3:30 – midnight.


Performs and/or supervises either the layout and installation of traffic control markings; or the fabrication of traffic control signs, or the installation of traffic control signs, using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and approved by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).


Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Two year experience operating pavement marking equipment, or fabricating traffic signs, or installing traffic signs; and
Possession of a valid Driver License.


An equivalent combination of training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted above; and
Possession of a valid Driver License.

Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.


  • Work is generally outdoors and may occur during moderately adverse conditions to include weather, traffic, dampness, exposure to storm water and waste water flows and atmospheres.
  • Involves physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Lift and carry equipment for periods of short duration but repeatedly over the course of a day (occasionally requires heavy lifting).

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:

    • Supervises a traffic sign fabrication crew, or the field operations of a pavement marking crew, or the field operations of a sign installation and maintenance crew by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance.
    • Trains others in sign fabrication, sign installation, or pavement marking duties.
    • Operates pavement marking equipment such as small, medium and long line paint stripers, pre-melters, bituminous machine, pavement markings grinder, thermoplastic machines and generators to apply traffic control markings on roadways in accordance with work orders, blueprints, MUTCD and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) manuals.
    • Loads, maintains and repairs road marking equipment such as small, medium and long line paint stripers, pre-melters, bituminous machine, pavement markings grinder, thermoplastic machines and generators to ensure proper operation of equipment.
    • Operates equipment such as electric/hydraulic die cutters, and computerized graphic printer/plotter, to fabricate traffic control signs and street markers.
    • Uses the silk screen process to fabricate signs in accordance with MUTCD and FDOT standards by using Mylars, and a 5000 watt light to expose the print of traffic signs on a screen; and, then using a vacuum table to print the positive or negative image to the sign blank.
    • Interprets work orders and associated blueprints, draws sketches and calculates measurements to determine materials needed.
    • Selects traffic control signs, determines appropriate sign locations and installs signs on roadway easements.
    • Sets up barricades for road closures in accordance with FDOT manuals.
    • Listens to and refers to appropriate staff citizens’ complaints; compiles reports; and attends meetings to receive and disseminate information.
    • Drives pickup truck to and from work sites, loads and unloads supplies and equipment, and performs minor safety and operational checks.
    • Performs other related duties as required.


      • Working knowledge of MUTCD and FDOT Traffic Standards applicable to the application of roadway markings, sign fabrication, sign installation, or road closures.
      • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of roadway marking, sign fabrication, or sign installation equipment.
      • Working knowledge of the preparation and application of materials used to mark roadways and fabricate signs.
      • Working knowledge of high school level mathematics.
      • Working knowledge of basic drafting symbols and terminology.
      • Skill in operating and performing minor repairs on small, medium and long line paint stripers, pre-melters, bituminous machine, pavement markings grinder, thermoplastic machines and generators.
      • Skill in using sign fabrication tools and equipment such as squeeze roller applicators, electric/hydraulic die cutter, hot ovens, silk screening equipment, and a computerized graphic printer/plotter.
      • Skill in using sign installation tools and equipment such as wrenches, posthole diggers, core drilling machines, sign post extractors, electric saws and jackhammers.
      • Skill in identifying discrepancies between work order or blueprint dimensions and actual road dimensions.
      • Ability to read and understand aspects of blueprints, survey maps and work orders that describe the tasks to be performed.
      • Ability to apply pavement markings, to fabricate signs or to install signs.
      • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
      • Ability to follow established procedures.
      • Ability to work effectively with others.
      • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
      • Ability to operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment.
      • Ability to use computer terminals to accurately make sign details.


        • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
        • FDOT MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level Certification.
        • IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) Traffic Sign Level II.
