The Hillsborough County Public Works Department is seeking a Mosquito Control Inspector to perform mosquito control services in the unincorporated areas of Hillsborough County. The ideal candidate will have will have the ability to work alongside busy roadways, in swamplands, in brushy areas performing manual labor in outside environment, exposed to heat, sun, high humidity, rain and other adverse weather conditions. Candidate will walk/stand for prolonged periods of time (approximately six (6) hours) per day. The job also requires frequent fine manipulations, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds, and occasional bending, crawling, climbing and stooping. Candidate will be required to obtain a Public Health Spray License and an Aquatic Spray License within six months of being hired.


Performs mosquito surveillance tasks and field inspection work, including spraying, in the control and extermination of mosquitoes, undesirable arthropods and noxious weeds.


Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
One year of experience providing pest control services using a herbicide or insecticide; and
Possession of valid Driver License.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted below; and
Possession of valid Driver License.

Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.


  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Position may require extensive bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting.
  • Willingness and ability to be routinely and frequently around chemicals including pesticides and herbicides.

    • Conducts inspections of properties to determine mosquito breeding areas and identify types of larvae.
    • Notifies owners or occupants of inspection findings.
    • Operates vehicle and mounted spray equipment and applies larvicidal and adulticidal preparations to mosquito breeding areas.
    • Mixes insecticides and herbicides to apply on mosquito and weed infested areas.
    • Loads pesticides into the spray tank, and cleans fogging and larvicidal machines or other equipment.
    • Reports large or unusual mosquito breeding areas requiring special larvicidal applications from helicopters or large spray trucks.
    • Performs preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
    • Performs other related duties as required.





    • Knowledge of mosquito breeding habitats and adult and larvae specimen identification.
    • Knowledge of control and extermination methods, materials, and equipment.
    • Knowledge of larvicidal and adulticiding equipment.
    • Knowledge of Units of Measurement (i.e. liquids, solids and acreage).
    • Skill in the operation, calibration, and maintenance of spray equipment.
    • Ability to work effectively with others.
    • Ability to prepare written activity reports.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to read maps.


      Possession of State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Applicator License in Aquatic Pest Control and State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control Certification within the 6 months probationary period.
