Responsibilities

The Airport Police Supervisors supervise and assign personnel in order to effectively protect all citizens using the facilities and protect City property at the Dayton International Airport. Oversees and directs Airport Police programs in accordance with City, State, Federal Aviation Administration and Transportation Security Administration policies. Directs the investigations of all violations in criminal traffic activities at the Airport to ensure that proper procedures have been followed and proper corrective action has been taken. Incumbents supervise Airport Police Officers, dispatchers, and clerical staff, in the Division of Airport Police.

In addition to supervising division personnel, the incumbent must also perform all duties of an Airport Police Officer or Dispatcher when necessary. 

  • Airport Police Officers respond to all service calls, patrol Dayton International Airport (DAY), and investigate all criminal and traffic violations, and assists travelers using the facilities at the airport.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     
  • Dispatchers receive all public service calls and internal radio communications, and dispatches Airport Police Officers as necessary. The dispatcher performs typing, filing and numerous other office duties. 
Supervisors must maintain a thorough knowledge of all procedures, rules and policies as set forth by the City of Dayton, Department of Aviation, FAA and TSA as well as the approved Airport Security Plan to ensure compliance by employees, tenants and users of the Airport.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or a closely related field AND one of the following levels of experiences:

1. Three (3) years of experience as an Airport Police Officer

2. Three (3) years of experience as a supervisor in a law enforcement agency

3. Three (3) years of experience in military law enforcement or military combat experience

High school diploma or G.E.D. AND one of the following levels of experience:

1. Five (5) years of experience as an Airport Police Officer

2. Five (5) years of experience as a supervisor in a law enforcement agency

3. Five (5) years of experience in military law enforcement or military combat experience

Must obtain an Associate’s degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or a closely related field within 3 years of appointment as an Airport Police Supervisor.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region. 

Age

Must be at least 21 years of age.


Certifications

Must possess an Ohio Certification as a Peace Officer or certification in another state or military certification and be able to obtain Ohio certification through prior equivalent documented training within 12 months of appointment, and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

License Requirements

Must have a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain as a condition of employment.

Citizenship

Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Background Investigation

  • Must be of good moral character and pass an extensive background investigation including polygraph examination, psychological examination and a credit check.

  • Must not have any felony convictions, even if such conviction has been sealed or expunged.

  • Must not have any misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence unless conviction has been expunged or set aside with the exception of those who have as a condition of pardon, expungement or restoration of civil rights, been expressly barred from possessing or receiving firearms.

  • Must be able to meet any and all Ohio Administrative Code or Ohio Revised Code that governs ability to attend the Police Officer Training Academies and the ability to possess or receive firearms.

  • Must pass all background checks deemed necessary to work at Dayton International Airport.

Background Check 
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
