Responsibilities

Provides accounting and professional customer service to clients regarding their obligations and compliance with the City of Dayton Income Tax Ordinance.  Assist customers with filing tax returns and/or answering questions.  Audit tax returns for refund and non-refund purposes as well as reconciles taxable and non-taxable income and deductions received from businesses and individuals.  While auditing returns and/or making adjustments, errors are corrected by contacting taxpayers, tax professionals, business representatives and other pertinent parties to secure additional records.  Conducts field audits to research businesses and locations that have not filed income tax returns. Audit tax returns and financial records of businesses, partnerships and persons subject to city income tax to determine tax obligations on wages paid to employees who are subject to tax withholding provisions. The incumbent must have excellent written and oral presentation skills in communicating findings and have the ability to educate the public on the Income Tax Ordinance.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree AND 3 years of experience in preparing and/or auditing income tax returns or financial records.  A Master of Accountancy (MAcc), Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is desired.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region. 

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check 
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
