Introduction

Nature of Work

Supervises and trains a crew in the repair, resurfacing, reconstruction, maintenance and clearing of City streets, alleys and expressways. Directs the maintenance of turf areas in the expressway system, parks and vacant lands, and oversees the removal of hazardous trees from City owned lands and public rights of way. Assists in making the determination as to necessary equipment, tools and personnel needed for projects; developing and assigning schedules for the performance of regular maintenance functions. Keeps and maintains records and correspondence; documents daily work activities and resources utilizing established work order processes. Supervisors must have a working knowledge of blueprints, sketches and written descriptions and should have a basic understanding of surveying.

Minimum Education

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).

Minimum Experience

Must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Four years of experience in street construction or street maintenance and repair work; OR

  2. Four years of experience in grounds maintenance and mowing activities; OR

  3. Four years of general construction work (i.e. concrete, asphalt, carpentry)

License Requirements

At time of appointment, must possess and maintain, a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.), including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio, as a term and condition of continued employment. Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence.

Promotional Qualifications

Must have been permanently employed full-time by the City of Dayton for 6 consecutive months in the classification of Bridge Maintenance Worker II, Equipment Operator III, Expressway Maintenance Crew Leader, Park Maintenance Crew Leader, or Tree Service Crew Leader and be in a current pay grade below S13, including pay grades 125 (Wage) or below, 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.

Open Competitive Applicants

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.

Notes

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

Police background investigation will be required. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. 

Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. 

The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees subsequent to HR Policy 2.09.

Selection Plan

In addition to the computerized Civil Service exam, an oral component will also be conducted. Specific instructions about the oral exam will be given at a later date.  All candidates MUST complete both segments to be considered for placement on the eligible list.
