Introduction

Responsibilities

The Chief Counsel administers and supervises the proper and just disposition of all legal matters, over which the Department of Law has authority and for which no other government entity has assumed responsibility; these matters include civil, criminal, traffic or other legal matters. The incumbent has wide latitude and discretion in assisting the Director or Chief Prosecutor in the operation of the Criminal and/or Civil Division of the Law Department. The primary responsibility of the Chief Counsel is to ensure the effective, timely, and proper handling of each legal matter that the Law Department is consulted on. Along with assigned staff, the incumbent works closely with all other departments in the organization and must be able to inform them of best policies, practices and procedures. Provides general legal advice and counsel regarding the interpretation of the law, both substantive and procedural, to other departments as well as to the Office of the City Manager and Commission. 

Minimum Qualifications

L.L.B or J.D. Degree from an accredited law school AND 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney. Must be a member in good standing with the Ohio Bar and be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.
