Introduction

Responsibilities

Protects public health, safety, private property and investment by inspecting installations, repairs, alterations, construction or demolition to new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with construction codes. These inspections range from single family residences to high rise office buildings, schools, hospitals and manufacturing plants. Must use communication skills with contractors, violators and complainants to achieve code compliance and if necessary, serves as an expert witness for prosecution of code violators.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.). 

Experience 
Applicant must meet one of the following requirements: 

1. Possess a current State of Ohio full Electrical Safety Inspector (ESI) Certification. 

2. Electrician at the journeyworker level, or equivalent, AND 6 years of experience. 

3. Electrican at the journeyworker level, or equivalent, AND 4 years of experience: 2 years as an Electrical Supervisor AND 2 years of experience as a building department Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee (with a municipality). 

4. Electrical Engineer registered in the State of Ohio.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

General Requirements

Applicants who do not have a current full State of Ohio Electrical Inspector Certification at time of appointment must obtain said Certification, pursuant to Ohio Building Code Section 103.3.6, prior to the end of their 2 year interim certification.

Special Requirements

Must hold either an interim or full State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector (ESI) Certification at time of application.

Notes

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

Background Check 
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees. 

Important COVID-19 Information 
Beginning November 1, 2021, newly hired City of Dayton employees must attest to being fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus or be required to become fully vaccinated within 90 days of being hired.
