Responsibilities

The Mediation Coordinator focuses on providing internal team and organizational development services within the City of Dayton. The incumbent provides conflict and intervention services to external customers utilizing a unique consultant and service delivery model in professional expertise areas including mediation, conflict intervention, organizational and leadership development, coaching, and training. Develops a departmental conflict management system to process, identify, refer, and address employee workplace conflict issues with an emphasis on timely and early intervention. The Coordinator provides essential support and guidance for division managers and supervisors on workplace conflict, performance improvement and disciplinary process interventions; presents recommendations for coaching and mentoring services for employees to improve their conflict competence, address performance concerns, and improve team function. Designs and provides customized training and set standards to strengthen employee’s capacity to respond effectively to workplace conflict issues, create and maintain effective workplace culture and team dynamics, and ensure effective cross-team collaboration. Works closely with directors, division managers, supervisors, and external corporate leaders to provide a comprehensive range of conflict intervention and development services.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Conflict Resolution, Organization/Leadership Development, Human Resource Learning and Development, Organizational Psychology, or a closely related field AND 5 years of relevant professional work experience in mediation, conflict resolution, team or organizational development, coaching, change management initiatives, conflict management systems design, training, curriculum design, conducting needs assessment, and leadership development.

License Requirements

Must have a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain as a condition of employment.

Special Requirements

Certification as a Certified Transformative Mediator by the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation, Inc.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Incumbent is expected to stay abreast of knowledge, skills & abilities including, but not limited to the following areas:

  1. Advanced training skills and experience with applying adult teaching/learning principles, including experience with adult education theories, practices and trends.

  2. Comprehensive knowledge of research, interviewing, assessment, and consultation techniques.

  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, diplomacy, and political acumen.

  4. Excellent analytical, strategic, and critical thinking skills.

  5. Show initiative, be attentive to detail, customer service focused, and be able to maintain confidentiality concerning sensitive issues in a professional manner.

  6. Experience dealing with a variety of clients regarding highly sensitive issues.

  7. Thinks independently, considers options or perspectives that may go against the status quo.

  8. Demonstrated experience in conducting conflict analysis, consultation, and strategy development for/with clients regarding workplace conflict, performance management, high conflict people/situations, and team dysfunction.

  9. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships at all levels and across the system

  10. Demonstrate high level of trust, confidentiality, integrity and leadership presence.

Notes

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.
