Introduction

 

This is a continuous recruitment that may be available year round. Applications are reviewed for certification on a quarterly basis.  Applicants that meet the minimum qualifications for this position will be permitted to take the Civil Service examination.  Applicants will be notified of their status via email and may only apply once per quarter.

Please note, you MUST apply in each quarter for which you wish to be tested. Applicants who have submitted previous applications WILL NOT automatically be certified for future exams.

Nature of Work

Leads and participates with a crew in the performance of a variety of skilled tasks including the repair, operation, maintenance and installation of Water Utility assets.  Mentors and assists with training the Water & Sewer Worker I's and Water & Sewer Worker II's.  Troubleshoots complaints and resolves or gathers necessary information for the resolution of such problems independently in the field or in the office.  Responds to on-call emergency situations 24 hours a day, year round.  The incumbent will learn and use complex data software systems. As a crew leader the incumbent will respond to on-site complaints regarding sanitary, storm, and water service related problems.

Minimum Education

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).

Minimum Experience

Must meet one of the following requirements:
  
1. Five years of experience in construction and/or the operation, maintenance and repair of a public or private water, wastewater or storm water system; OR
 
2. Two years of experience as a City of Dayton Water and Sewer Worker I or Water and Sewer Worker II WITH an Ohio EPA Class I Distribution or Class I Wastewater Collections certification.

License Requirements

At time of appointment, must possess and maintain, as a term and condition of continued employment, a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.) with a Tanker Endorsement, including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio.  Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence.

Special Requirements

At time of appointment, must possess and maintain as a term and condition of continued employment, an Ohio EPA Class I Wastewater Collection Operator Certification OR an Ohio EPA Class I Water Distribution Certification.
  
Within 30 months of appointment, must obtain and maintain an Ohio EPA Class II Wastewater Collection Operator Certification OR an Ohio  EPA Class II Water Distribution Certification as a term and condition of continued employment.

Promotional Qualifications

Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 118 (Wage) or below, pay grade 29 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position.  Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.

Open Competitive Applicants

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.

Notes

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination.  Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.

Police background investigation will be required. Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. 
 
Effective July 15, 2019, the City of Dayton adopted the Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy (HR 1.03). Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. 
 
The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees subsequent to HR Policy 2.09.
