Introduction


    

Responsibilities

Directs, schedules, reviews and supervises the activities of personnel engaged in roadway, alley, and bridge maintenance and repair work, ground maintenance operations for forestry, parks, expressways, boulevards, vacant lots, and traffic control signage. Assigns daily tasks to supervisors; schedules work for crews by priority and availability of manpower and required equipment. Conducts field supervision of crews involved in asphalt resurfacing, maintenance and repairs on roadways and bridges, setup of detours for traffic control, and winter deicing and snow removal operations. Develops and implements employee training programs; communicates safety guidelines and procedures to personnel; implements safety rules and OSHA regulations. Maintains effective recordkeeping systems and resolves citizen complaints. Attends City Commission meetings to provide technical and operational information on Division activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet one of the following qualifications:

1.  Associate's degree in Business, Management, Forestry, Horticulture, or a Construction related discipline, or a closely related field AND must have 6 years of experience in any of the following areas: 

  • Roadway construction, maintenance, or repair work
  • Ground maintenance activities for parks, ball fields or other miscellaneous green space areas
  • Four of the 6 years of experience must have been in a supervisory capacity
2.  Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.) AND must have 8 years of experience in any of the following areas:

  • Roadway construction, maintenance, or repair work
  • Ground maintenance activities for parks, ball fields or other miscellaneous green space areas 
  • Four of the 8 years of experience must have been in a supervisory capacity

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment.

Within 120 days of appointment, must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.), including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio. Out of state residents must have equivalent license from their state of residence within the prescribed 120 days of appointment.

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. 

Effective July 15, 2019, the City of Dayton adopted the Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy (HR 1.03). Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment.
